I want to set up a mail server at home, running IMAP, such that everyone in my house can access their email from any computer in the house -- or outside the house for that matter. I want the actual mail to be stored on the server machine.
OK, is this possible ? There is lots of info here about how to set up the servers, but the additional question I would be asking is how to set up the clients to take advantage of the server.
Thanks.

ygor,
Can you be a little more specific about your question? setting up email clients on Mac or PC is pretty simple and well documented on the web whether using POP or IMAP as you want.
What kind of clients are you running? What email clients are you trying to set up?

Fair question. Easy answer: All Apple Mail, and now one iPad.

And why don't I see an option to notify me by e-mail for responses on this thread ?
What setting did I miss, please ?

what i have going is this;
i set up my mail server in conjunction with a dynamic dns. I set up a domain called somename.homeip.net with dyndns.org.
I then simply set up my apple mail with a new mail account, type is imap. incoming server is somename.homeip.net, the smtp server is the same.
it all just works.
(i don't know how on this site to be notified of updates to this thread.)
if you reply to this, maybe we can take it off line and chat / work through our actual email addresses.
this forum seems kinda quiet. don't know if we're helping anyone else here.
Yes, it is possible to run a mailserver from home with the instructions fro this site. I've been doing it for many years myself before I moved my production server to macminicolo. Test server is still at home. All you need is a connection to the internet and no important ports blocked. Some ISP's block incoming and/or outgoing email traffic. It is solvable but makes a bit more complex.
(PS there are no email notifications yet. I'm working on it, Sorry...)
