Hello

I'm about to sell my Mac mini G4 (ie with the PowerPC processor) to friend. On that Mac mini, I have installed

PHP Version 5.4.0RC5-dev
MySQL 5.1.40
Apache 2.2.21

successfully, and many popular PHP apss run pefrectly on this machine.

But, the friend ahs asked if the cPanel can be installed and run on it.
Surely, there are many Web Management software like WebMin and other but he is accustomed to cPanel, and naturally asks for cPanel.

I've tried the "How to install cPanel/WHM on a fresh installation of Linux - WHM Setup Tutorials) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4Lqrbsptd4 but of course it asks for CentOS or similar Linux based OS.

I was wondering how possible it is to install cPanel on Mac, PowerPC or Intel?

Thanks!

I used your great documentation to get a localhost server running on my iMac but i've run into a problem: i configured PHP pretty much the way you wrote in the documentation and recently noticed you had it compile without iconv and now i'm trying to use a piece of the Zend framework (Lucene search) that calls iconv functions and of course it fails with "Fatal error: Call to undefined function iconv()"

Was there a reason you compiled PHP without iconv: like it does not work on osx, or something else?

Any guidance on how to re-compile PHP with iconv: is it as simple as changing the line from without iconv to with iconv?

Thanks

Hi!

I'm considering to move from this nice DIY setup to Lion Server, just to ease the setup and maintenance.

The only thing I'm really concerned about is my mail server, and getting all my users mails over to Lion.
Do you know of any guide on how to do this?

Also, is there any particular functionality I will loose when migrating from DIY setup to Lion server (again, mail is my primarily concern)?

Thanks in advance!

I do have a server running set up according to the guidelines on this site.

Will my mail server continue to work after I upgrade to Lion, or will I have to reinstall reconfigure something, for this to work?
How about the Apache?

First of all, thanks for all the guides... My server works just fine ;) Only one thing i was missing, it is installing mod_svn for apache.. Here is my contribution how to build mod_svn.

1. Get SVN sources. The version shipped with Snow Leopard is 1.6.15
2. Compile it. I do all in 64 bits.

CFLAGS="-g -arch x86_64" CXXFLAGS="-arch x86_64" LDFLAGS="" \
   ./configure --prefix=/usr/local \
    --mandir=/usr/local/share/man --with-ssl \
    --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs --with-zlib="/usr" \
    --enable-swig-bindings=no --without-berkeley-db \
    --with-apr=/usr/local/apache2 \
    --with-apr-util=/usr/local/apache2

    make
    sudo make install

The configuration for apache is straight forward and described on tigris site.

First, Thanks for these tutorials. Until I hit this snafu everything was going well. Second, I tried to post this as a comment in the 32 PHP post but it told me I was a spammer so my apologies to Richard if he sees this twice.

Hi Richard (& others)--

I know this is outside the normal realm and scope of this site, but I'm not sure where else to turn. I'd like to upgrade Postfix on a PPC Mac OS X Server 10.5 and a Mac Pro MOSXS 10.6. They come w/ v2.4.3 and v2.5.5, respectively, and I need at least v2.6 to implement the tcp_windowsize parameter in the hopes of getting around a sending problem w/ larger messages.

Currently, I'm tackling the G4 Leopard Server first, since it is a backup and fouling it up isn't the end of the world. I can get Postfix 2.8.2 to compile and run, and even receive mail, but I must be messing up something with my make statement, as I am unable to use SASL authentication for sending (and I could before). The log shows:

May 5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: connect from unknown[192.168.1.101]
May 5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: warning: SASL authentication failure: Password verification failed
May 5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: warning: unknown[192.168.1.101]: SASL PLAIN authentication failed: authentication failure
May 5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: lost connection after AUTH from unknown[192.168.1.101]
May 5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: disconnect from unknown[192.168.1.101]

I've tried to use a portion of the make statement from the directions here, w/ some tweaking from the docs at postfix.org. Since this is a MOSXS, I have not configured MySQL, so I've left that part out. Here is what I entered last:

sudo make -f Makefile.init makefiles CCARGS="-DUSE_TLS -DUSE_SASL_AUTH -DUSE_CYRUS_SASL -I/usr/include/sasl \
" AUXLIBS="-lssl -lcrypto -L/usr/local/lib -lsasl2"

Any thoughts or insights into why this error might be occurring? I've been unable to find any links to instructions or tips for upgrading the MOSXS installation of Postfix.

Thanks,
Fred

Hi!

I have a problem that has been keeping me puzzled since I installed my OSX "Server" in October:

When I restart my server, postfix cannot connect to Dovecot. This it turns out, is related to that postgrey cannot ponnect to the database.
For some reason, sqlgrey is trying to connect to the socket (I assume) /tmp/mysql.sock!

The workaround for this is simple, just create a link from the socket file /private/var/mysql/mysql.sock to /tmp/mysql.sock using:
"ln /private/var/mysql/mysql.sock /tmp/mysql.sock".
The disadvantage of this, is that /tmp is emptied on every restart of the server, so I have to manually run this command after each restart.

But WHY is this happening? Looking in my sqlgrey.conf, I have the following connection settings:
db_type = mysql
db_name = sqlgrey
# Note: the following are not used with SQLite
db_host = localhost
db_port = default

Which is the same as any other component that uses MySQL on the system, and all other works fine!
I have tried to change the location of the mysql.sock file, but that basically causes all other components to fail :-(

Is there a hidden setting in perl (which sqlgrey is built upon), which points to an alternative mysql location?

Alternatively how can I prevent OSX from deleting the /tmp/mysql.sock link on shutdown?

What I see in my system.log file is this:
Apr 4 10:38:52 Minin com.diymacserver.sqlgrey[357]: dbaccess: can't connect to DB: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)
Apr 4 10:38:52 Minin com.diymacserver.sqlgrey[357]: dbaccess: error: couldn't get now() from DB: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

Best regards,

Dear Postfix forum,

After upgrading my Mac OS X client, I got the following error message:

... postfix/smtpd[526]: fatal: unsupported dictionary type: mysql

I noticed that the /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd executable had been changed, together with who knows what else in that directory. So I restored the old one, only to get a similar error message from the trivial-rewrite executable (in the same directory). So I restored that as well, followed by the cleanup one, and then all is well again.

So a couple of questions:

* What should I do to fix things properly?

* How can I avoid having to do this next time I upgrade the OS?

Thanks and best regards,

Rob

PS Setup has otherwise worked great - many thanks!

I'm running pretty much the default install of postfix that comes with Snow Leopard. I can send mail out to the internet in a terminal on the system in question using mail or telnet to port 25 using localhost or the ip on the system.
The problem I'm having is no other systems on my local network can get a connection to port 25.
I've verified with netstat there is a process listening on port 25. I've setup mynetworks in include all ip's on my local network. I've made multiple searches on different forum's trying to figure this out but I'm missing the boat somewhere. Can anyone give me some clue's on what to check.

I am having trouble getting the newest version of MySql-5.5.8 to startup on my Snow Leopard, 64-bit Intel arch., iMac and am wondering if i screwed-up the installation process or did not follow direction right:
I downloaded the MacOSX dmg package mysql-5.5.8-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg
and ran the installer, but did not install the Preference Pane as instructed in documentation.

However, here's where i get confused you recently stated that,

you no longer need to compile MySQL. Which is excellent news as it simplifies the setup and a lot of the problems I see here from users.

So installed MySQL but do i now skip your "Compiling MySQL 5.1.x in 64 bits mode on Snow Leopard" instructions in the documentation?

I created the .bash_profile file and placed it in my home directory to be able to use MySQL commands from the Terminal but now something called .bash_profile.swp as showed up there too and seems to be messing something up as i cannot access MySQL from the Terminal saying it

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

Looking inside this .swp file reveals:

b0VIM 7.2

Richard,

How do I go about doing a remove and or possibly a reinstall ?? I'm not happy with some of my options and would prefer to start clean without doing a complete rebuild of the OS.

I installed the latest roundcube (which doesn't seem to have many feature advantages over 3.1) and I immediately ran into 500 errors. I followed your instructions to load a clean copy and move my symlink after it was all working.

It turned out the httpd_error_log was full of errors from .htaccess with directives that weren't allowed.

[Mon Nov 22 01:33:09 2010] [alert] [client 99.153.67.242] /data/mail.whiterose.org/htdocs/webmail/.htaccess: AddType not allowed here, referer: http://mail.whiterose.org/

Right now I have renamed the .htaccess to old.htaccess to keep it from being used. Is there a way to get it working? Is it necessary?

Thanks

Richard, just a small discrepancy in documentation. Both the Leopard and Snow Leopard pages for Securing Your MySQL Install link to the Compiling Apache page and skip the Starting MySQL page.

Hi, I am considering setting up a server on a C2D Mac mini running SL as described on this site soon. Can anyone explain the pros and cons of compiling everything in 64 bits vs 32 bits, considering the kernel will be 32 bits? I am curious as to the impact on memory usage, disk usage, etc. My initial thoughts are that 32 bits will use less memory, processing, etc. I hope to use this mini as a desktop simultaneously as a server(is this a good idea?). Am I wrong?

Hi!

I'm about to start setting up a couple of Mac mini as internet servers (everything you describe here + Ruby on Rails + node.js).
I like your approach with compiling everything, but before I start I would like to know the pros and cons with MacPorts/Fink approach.

Next question is security and what is common the common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

Lastly how to compare to an Ubuntu server. (But I'm biased to use Mac Mini because of size and hw quality = uptime). If anyone can suggest a good reason to run Ubuntu, I consider to use it in a VMWare Fusion or similar.

Thanks for all suggestions! I hope to contribute with a few recipes when done with my servers.

I upgraded to Apache 2 a while ago (so I could use Subversion). Recently I have set up some secure areas on one of my sites but have noticed that it can be circumvented by using a URL with the folder in question in a different case. For example, I can make
http://mydomain.com/ABC/
secure but
http://mydomain.com/aBC/
will circumvent the authentication!

This didn't happen with Apache 1.3, I believe because it included mod_hfs_apple which 'compensates' for HFS+'s case insensitivity (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=ServerAdmin/10.4/en/c3ws31.html). mod_hfs_apple is not included in my instance of Apache 2 (2.2.4) . Does anyone know if Apple ever upgraded it for Apache 2, and if so, from where I can get it?
