Micheal, it looks like your mail is not fed into Dspam therefore no signature is added and all fails. I think you have to look into the connection between postfix and dspam there lies the error. It could be configuration or a permission problem.

I've managed to configure and install DSpam, but it's not working correctly.

I'm not sure what I've done wrong. I've reverted, but we'd like to use dspam (or other anti-spam software on our server.

Fred, don't worry about being clueless that's exactly how I started several years ago. A lot of information can be found in the configuration file of the current setup. There it is defined which SASL or other authentication is used at the moment. Unfortunately I don't have a server license otherwise I would have a look at it myself. If you want I can have a look at it, please mail me at info @ this domain.

Hey Richard, thanks for the reply! No need for an apology...I'm grateful for your assistance, whenever it comes. I guess I just really don't have any expertise on what all goes into generating these make statements. I can follow what some of the components mean, but I don't really have any idea of the exact syntax and ordering, or how I'd create one on my own and have everything included that's needed. I'm looking at:

http://www.postfix.org/SASL_README.html

where it discusses PAM (which it says uses saslauthd) to try to understand more, but I'm still a little lost.

- How can I tell for sure whether PAM is indeed what's being used for MOSXS?
- If it is, then what should I add to the make statement? Something referencing saslauthd?
- I've been Googling a lot, but it sure seems difficult to find out the specifics of Postfix on MOSXS. I find it difficult to believe that hardly anybody has tried upgrading the MOSXS-included Postfix...where should I look?

Sorry that I'm rather clueless when it comes to compiling, and thus far rely on what you and others specify in tutorials, hints, etc. Thanks again for your reply!

Fred, sorry for the later then planned reply (had a few days off!) but the problem is that the server version uses a completely different authentication method then I do in my setup. I think it uses the PAM method. I have no experience with that or how compiling will affect the setup.

You could have a look at the method macports uses for compiling postfix: https://trac.macports.org/browser/trunk/dports/mail/postfix/Portfile

Hi Richard (& others)--

I know this is outside the normal realm and scope of this site, but I'm not sure where else to turn. I'd like to upgrade Postfix on a PPC Mac OS X Server 10.5 and a Mac Pro MOSXS 10.6. They come w/ v2.4.3 and v2.5.5, respectively, and I need at least v2.6 to implement the tcp_windowsize parameter in the hopes of getting around a sending problem w/ larger messages.

Currently, I'm tackling the G4 Leopard Server first, since it is a backup and fouling it up isn't the end of the world. I can get Postfix 2.8.2 to compile and run, and even receive mail, but I must be messing up something with my make statement, as I am unable to use SASL authentication for sending (and I could before). The log shows:

May 5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: connect from unknown[192.168.1.101]
May 5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: warning: SASL authentication failure: Password verification failed
May 5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: warning: unknown[192.168.1.101]: SASL PLAIN authentication failed: authentication failure
May 5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: lost connection after AUTH from unknown[192.168.1.101]
May 5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: disconnect from unknown[192.168.1.101]

I've tried to use a portion of the make statement from the directions here, w/ some tweaking from the docs at postfix.org. Since this is a MOSXS, I have not configured MySQL, so I've left that part out. Here is what I entered last:

sudo make -f Makefile.init makefiles CCARGS="-DUSE_TLS -DUSE_SASL_AUTH -DUSE_CYRUS_SASL -I/usr/include/sasl \
" AUXLIBS="-lssl -lcrypto -L/usr/local/lib -lsasl2"

Any thoughts or insights into why this error might be occurring? I've been unable to find any links to instructions or tips for upgrading the MOSXS installation of Postfix.

Thanks,
Fred

Dear Postfix forum,

After upgrading my Mac OS X client, I got the following error message:

... postfix/smtpd[526]: fatal: unsupported dictionary type: mysql

I noticed that the /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd executable had been changed, together with who knows what else in that directory. So I restored the old one, only to get a similar error message from the trivial-rewrite executable (in the same directory). So I restored that as well, followed by the cleanup one, and then all is well again.

So a couple of questions:

* What should I do to fix things properly?

* How can I avoid having to do this next time I upgrade the OS?

Thanks and best regards,

Rob

PS Setup has otherwise worked great - many thanks!

After fighting with this for a day I decided I would try another Mac system I have running Snow Leopard. After making the very simple changes to the default postfix settings, mynetwork, inet_interface I found the OS would allow connections to port 25 by all systems on my local network and would send email to the internet without problems.

It would appear as though the 1st system I was working with has some under the hood network configuration issues which is preventing connections to port 25.

In the past I had been experiencing problems with this system in with it not connecting to the network via DHCP so apparently what ever the problem is it is also affecting other port binding processes.

So the bottom line is. The 2.5.5 default install of postfix to Snow Leopard works fine for accepting and relaying OUTGOING email from internal local network by just making a few basic adjustments in the main.cf.

Thanks for the help.

Our setup is for a public facing mailserver. I'm not sure how one might fit within a local network as we rely on the public DNS infrastructure like MX records to determine mail delivery and routing.

Maybe someone else can shed some light on this specific scenario.

I compared my main.cf with the one you gave me the link for and there seems to be a lot of extra stuff mysql, authentication etc.
I'm running the default 2.5.5 nothing has been setup for authentication or database use.

I did start with a new main.cf file, set the debug up, hostname, and verified inet_interface was commented out

I opened another terminal while I was tailing the mail.log file and when my client connected I started getting the error below.
postfix/master[4799]: fatal: bind 0.0.0.0 port 25: Address already in use
I've tried to shutdown postfix and use netstat to find out if there was another program using port 25 but postfix seems to keep restarting. (may have something to do with some old instructions I followed to get postfix up and running.
As long as there isn't a client attaching I don't see the "Address already in use error.
I do see a continuous restart of the postfix daemon. Is that normal?
postfix/master[4845]: daemon started -- version 2.5.5, configuration /etc/postfix
Feb 6 03:02:49 MightyMac postfix/master[4845]: master exit time has arrived
Feb 6 03:02:49 MightyMac postfix/master[4873]: daemon started -- version 2.5.5, configuration /etc/postfix
Feb 6 03:03:49 MightyMac postfix/master[4873]: master exit time has arrived
postfix/master[4900]: daemon started -- version 2.5.5, configuration /etc/postfix
postfix/master[4900]: master exit time has arrived
postfix/master[4928]: daemon started -- version 2.5.5, configuration /etc/postfix
postfix/master[4928]: master exit time has arrived
postfix/master[4956]: daemon started -- version 2.5.5, configuration /etc/postfix
postfix/master[4956]: master exit time has arrived

Looks like I need to trouble shoot the looping restart. It may be the daemon is trying to restart when there is already one running.

I may change the port its running on just to see if the error moves with the port change.

Thanks for the quick response.
I've shutdown the local system firewall. (or so the GUI indicates it is)

I can access port 25 from the machine itself using telnet and get the Hostname ESMTP Postfix response.
my inet_interfaces is commented out
I'll investigate the information in the links you sent

My goal is to get postfix configured to receive and send email alerts from systems on my local network. Not really interested in incoming mail at this point.

There are several reasons why it might not work.

Firewall blocking port 25, this can be detected by trying to acces the port using telnet from the machine itself.

in main.cf you should have the line "inet_interfaces = localhost" removed, it restircts incoming connections to the local machine just like a firewall.

Are you sure postfix is using port 25 and not some other process?

This is a start, you can always chack your config against ours: http://diymacserver.com/installing-the-mailserver/the-mailserver-on-leopard/configuring-postfix-for-virtual-domains-and-dovecot-auth/

Or read our tests here: http://diymacserver.com/installing-the-mailserver/the-mailserver-on-leopard/checking-that-the-mailserver-works/

I'm running pretty much the default install of postfix that comes with Snow Leopard. I can send mail out to the internet in a terminal on the system in question using mail or telnet to port 25 using localhost or the ip on the system.
The problem I'm having is no other systems on my local network can get a connection to port 25.
I've verified with netstat there is a process listening on port 25. I've setup mynetworks in include all ip's on my local network. I've made multiple searches on different forum's trying to figure this out but I'm missing the boat somewhere. Can anyone give me some clue's on what to check. I realize I need to provide some more configuration information but I thought I'd wait until someone lets me know exactly what to post. Thanks in advance

Okay, seem to be making progress, although I can't say w/ 100% certainty that I know what the fix was. I went into the 3 mysql_virtual files and changed the "hosts" line from:

hosts = 127.0.0.1

as the instructions say, to:

hosts = localhost

No idea why that would make a difference-- they should be one and the same. However, things seem to work now w/o the error, and mail gets delivered properly. Would still be interested to hear your thoughts.

Now on to the next problem! :-D

Can you think of *any* reason why lookups from postfix to mysql would be failing? It seems to me that the critical log entries are:

I guess it's a sign you should throw in the towel and do something else when you're not even able to see the logs to tell you what might be going wrong...

Okay, I must be dense...what do I need to use to view these logs? Tried 'tail' and I got mostly gibberish over the screen!

Thx,

Larry, I have no clue to be honest. Every now and then I clear the queue manually of these things. Has nothing to do with Dovecot, this is postfix realted.

Hey Richard,

I just switched from your Courier setup to the Dovecot setup. I started getting messages like this:

May 24 16:18:17 autoreply postfix/smtpd[9133]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from itspmx3.zzz.ms.us[999.12.20.50]: 451 4.
3.0 <bwcassoc.comchad.allen@peer.zzz.ms.us>: Temporary lookup failure; from=<djackson@cvm.tamu.edu> to=<bwcassoc
.comchad.allen@peer.zzz.ms.us> proto=ESMTP helo=<itspmx3.zzz.ms.us>

for each bad address. How can I change the temporary failure to a permanent failure?

They are in /usr/local/mysql/data/ you'll need root access to read them.

Are the files readable for postfix.

notifications are not yet possible, I need to upgrade the software of the forum to do that. But don't despair Im working on it...

Uh oh...if you've never seen this, then I'm probably screwed! If you think of anything I can test or check out, I'm all ears. Seems to me like somehow postfix is unable to access info in the auxiliary virtual files. Dumb question: where are the MySQL-specific logs in our DIY installation?

Thx,
FT

P.S. Is there any way to subscribe to threads here for instant email notification?

I've never seen this error before. I would have to try some stuff to really pinpoint the cause of this. But I'm currently don't have access to a Mac, perhaps later...
