Thanks both -

It seems basically that Apple does not recommend/support Apache 2.x running on HFS+ volumes, and recommends using UFS volume instead. The relevant TAs are http://support.apple.com/kb/TA22750 and http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21099

The latter has a good illustration of the issue.

I guess reformatting as a case-sensitive HFS volume would do the trick, but much less convenient for Terminal work.

Redirection is a possibility but only for short names as one would need to create a redirection for every case permutation - 1. Tedious.

.htaccess files are out of favour at the moment: I am trying to clear up after a hacker injected some code somewhere that periodically creates .htaccess files in every conceivable folder containing a redirection to musikkorps.com...

Apache 2.2 does NOT provide that option (mod_hfs_apple), so one assumes it was clearly something created by apple.

Reading the support note, the implication is that post 10.4 versions of OSX do not have the same problem as pre-10.4 versions, implying that the issue is on Apple's side of the fence.

One assumes that this "feature" is only active if/when the disk itself is formatted as "extended, case-sensitive," not merely "extended" although the help item
does not state what the "default format" for OSX-Server volumes happens to be.

I believe that the general default in Disk Utility is "extended, journaled" but I do not know off hand. That is to say -- you do NOT get case sensitivity on a normal Apple Formatted disk.

Chris, don't really understand why the one URL is more secure then the other when you only change the case on one letter.

Wouldn't you use HTTPS to make it more secure?

Another approach could be to use a .htaccess file that redirects incorrect URL's with the wrong case to somewhere else.

I upgraded to Apache 2 a while ago (so I could use Subversion). Recently I have set up some secure areas on one of my sites but have noticed that it can be circumvented by using a URL with the folder in question in a different case. For example, I can make
http://mydomain.com/ABC/
secure but
http://mydomain.com/aBC/
will circumvent the authentication!

This didn't happen with Apache 1.3, I believe because it included mod_hfs_apple which 'compensates' for HFS+'s case insensitivity (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=ServerAdmin/10.4/en/c3ws31.html). mod_hfs_apple is not included in my instance of Apache 2 (2.2.4) . Does anyone know if Apple ever upgraded it for Apache 2, and if so, from where I can get it?

Hi, oppologies if this is in the wrong section. Please let me know, and I will move it.

I have a very irritating problem.

I created my account username om my Mac ( OSX 10.6.2 ) long before I created my website. If we take it that my user account name happens to be 'myname' and my website happens to be http://www.myname.com. I hadn't noticed it was a problem until the other day. I changed the site base ref to work from http://myname.com away from http://www.myname.com

The problem is on my Mac, the address http://myname.com is referring to the local web server, ie pre installed Apache and library/webserver/documents not the actual web address. If Web server is switched off via the sharing control panels - the address returns a google not found page? which seems very odd. It will also do this from any user account - identical results, so I know the Mac has reserved the name in some way.

I dont want to rename my user account. I cant see my own website on my Mac which is very frustrating, as my website root is forcing all traffic to http://myname.com ( which is what I want of course ) and not http://www.myname.com. I have to use Parallels with a version of Windows to see the site properly.

Naturally I continue to search all the archives I can but to no avail - maybe Im looking in the wrong areas.

If anyone has any idea I'd be very grateful.

No problem, why are you using apache 2.2.4? It's not even the default installed version on Snow Leopard (2.2.11).

The instructions are meant as a complete set and I'm assuming everyone is using the latest version. Checking all components with all possible older versions is not something I'm even considering ;-)

Consider this a closed ticket....

Hi Richard,

I think the problem is: looks like it's only possible to compile php with apache 2.2.13 on snow leopard. I tried to compile php with apache 2.2.4 and 2.0.55, but the "apxs" didn't work.

So can you please update your instruction and close this ticket?

Hi, I don't know why you think the instructions here don't work. They do, there is a whole separate section that describes compiling on Snow Leopard: http://diymacserver.com/installing-everything-on-snow-leopard/

Hi Guys,

I was trying to compile Apache+MySQL+PHP on Snow Leopard according to the instructions on this website, but unfortunately none of them worked.

I tried different solutions and finally succeeded. So I'm just posting the instructions here and hopefully it will be helpful to you.

1. First of all, you should download apache 2.2.13 (the apxs in its previous releases does not work)

2. Install xcode from Snow Leopard installation DVD (I guess you have already installed)

3. Install MacPorts and the following port libs:
- zlib
- curl
- xsl
- gd
- openjpeg
- libpng
- freetype
- xpm
- exif
- libiconv

4. Compile MySQL (5.1.39) as follows:

#!/bin/sh
MYSQLVERSION="5.1.39"
MYSQLDIR="/opt/mysql/$MYSQLVERSION"
make distclean
./configure \
--prefix=$MYSQLDIR \
--with-server-suffix=--standard \
--enable-thread-safe-client \
--enable-local-infile \
--enable-shared \
--with-zlib-dir=bundled \
--with-big-tables \
--with-readline \
--with-plugins=all \
--with-mysqld-user=mysql \
--with-extra-charsets=all \
--with-unix-socket-path=$MYSQLDIR/var/mysql.sock \
--without-docs
make
make install

5. Compile Apache (2.2.13) as follows:
#!/bin/sh
APACHEVERSION="2.2.13"
APACHEDIR="/opt/apache/$APACHEVERSION"
make distclean
./configure -prefix=$APACHEDIR \
-enable-mods-shared=all \
-with-ssl \
-with-mpm=prefork \
-disable-unique-id \
-enable-ssl \
-enable-dav \
-enable-cache \
-enable-proxy \
-enable-logio \
-enable-deflate \
-enable-cgi \
-enable-cgid \
-enable-suexec

6. Compile PHP (4.4.9 or 5.3.0) as follows:
#!/bin/sh
PHPVERSION=4.4.9
MYSQLVERSION=5.1.39
BUILDTAG=$PHPVERSION.mysql.$MYSQLVERSION
PHPDIR=/opt/php/$BUILDTAG
MYSQLDIR=/opt/mysql/$MYSQLVERSION
make distclean
./configure \
--prefix=$PHPDIR \
--with-apxs2=/opt/apache/$APACHEVERSION/bin/apxs \
--with-config-file-path=$PHPDIR/etc \

It could be that you are starting two separate apache's

To start the DIYMacserver apache you need to use
/usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start

If you use
apachectl start
, because of the PATH settings you are starting the default apple installed apache.

Please check which one is referred in /Library/StartupItems/Apache2/Apache2

Hi,

"apachectl start" now works properly
Thank you.
I`ve installed and compiled Apache, php and MySQL following your instructions.
All is working fine.

But I can´t start Apache2 on boot. I can enter “sudo /Library/StartupItems/Apache2/Apache2 start” in terminal after startup with no problem, and the web server starts.

Any clue?

Hi Bob,

The problem is that the module that generates the error is no longer used in this version of apache. The httpd.conf therefore is out of date. The simplest method is to comment out the line which includes this module but thee might be more.

The copy you performed copied the wrong httpd.conf as it is not configured to your settings. Remove your httpd.conf by renaming it and run a "sudo make install" to create a correct httpd.conf.

For wordpress you can use a caching plugin which will help in caching pages which means that MySQL isn't accessed that much. I don't use phpbb so I'm not that experienced with their options.

Hi

I'm running a mac mini, which Richard kindly helped me get a mail server on. The only think other than that I run is a web forum for football supporters. I'm having real problems with the mysql/apache load.

Basically the server slows to a crawl on lunchtimes. I've got about 1.5k users, which can balloon up to 2.5k if something big hits the news. Average hits per day is somewhere between 50k and 90k (again if there's some big story).

Does anyone have any ideas? When I look at top I'm seeing MySQL sometimes at 150% plus of CPU processes, and the CPU itself maxed out between User and System with no idle. Also the average CPU load seems to be 2.5 plus. All these things aren't supposed to be I'm pretty sure, but I am unsure if it's a software issue or a hardware one. The forum software I run is phpbb3.

Any ideas?
