I'm having the same problem that macmax was having.

Before I switched to maildrop all I had to do was send the new user an email for their directory to be setup. Now I get the "Unable to open mailbox" error message.

I didn't mkdir the domaindir as it has already been created.

I can not cd into the the domain directory. If I type
sudo cd /usr/local/virutal/bordo.com.au
it just takes me to /usr/local/virtual.

So I've no idea what's in it!

I've run maildirmake but still get the errors about not being able to open the mailbox.

ok I found in the old forum this dicussion :

Richard5

- the domain name whiterose.org should not be used in your main.cf,
because it also used as a virtual domain you get conflicts. Use the hostname you get from the ISP or
you local machine name for myhostname and mydomain and you won't have a conflict and still have a working mailserver.

Please make whiterose.org a virtual domain and try again.
Change the myhostname and mydomain into something different instead of the other way around as you solved it.

This resolves my problem.

Hello,
I had an error when the postfix server received an email :

postfix/pipe[1692]: 8699098029C:to=<xxxxxxx@xxxxxxxx.net>,relay=maildrop, delay=3100, delays=3100/0.02/0/0.04, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (temporary failure. Command output: /usr/local/bin/maildrop: Cannot have world/group permissions on the filter file - for your own good. )

Answer from Richard :

The rights should be:
-rw------- vmail wheel /etc/maildroprc

and I complete :

Don't forget to restart services authdaemond, maildrop and postfix

Thank's Richard

Ok I understand the problem. The issue is that maildrop is unable to create mail directories that don't exist.

I need to tweak the maildroprc script to create using the maildirmake command. As I am as new to maildrop as you are I'm still finding out about this.

You can create the directory manually by going into /usr/local/virtual/

mkdir the domaindir with proper rights and then
maildirmake mailaccoutname

you should get a directory with cur, tmp and new in there like others.

Yes, I've followed your istructions and the proper rights are all rights.

I obtain the error "(temporary failure. Command output: /usr/local/bin/maildrop: Unable to open mailbox. )" just when I create new email with postfixadmin.

Max, have you set the proper rights on the filesystem to allow maildrop to access the mail folder ?

If you are using my setup than the command should be:

sudo chown -R vmail:postfix /usr/local/virtual
