Hi!

I have a problem that has been keeping me puzzled since I installed my OSX "Server" in October:

When I restart my server, postfix cannot connect to Dovecot. This it turns out, is related to that postgrey cannot ponnect to the database.
For some reason, sqlgrey is trying to connect to the socket (I assume) /tmp/mysql.sock!

The workaround for this is simple, just create a link from the socket file /private/var/mysql/mysql.sock to /tmp/mysql.sock using:
"ln /private/var/mysql/mysql.sock /tmp/mysql.sock".
The disadvantage of this, is that /tmp is emptied on every restart of the server, so I have to manually run this command after each restart.

But WHY is this happening? Looking in my sqlgrey.conf, I have the following connection settings:
db_type = mysql
db_name = sqlgrey
# Note: the following are not used with SQLite
db_host = localhost
db_port = default

Which is the same as any other component that uses MySQL on the system, and all other works fine!
I have tried to change the location of the mysql.sock file, but that basically causes all other components to fail :-(

Is there a hidden setting in perl (which sqlgrey is built upon), which points to an alternative mysql location?

Alternatively how can I prevent OSX from deleting the /tmp/mysql.sock link on shutdown?

What I see in my system.log file is this:
Apr 4 10:38:52 Minin com.diymacserver.sqlgrey[357]: dbaccess: can't connect to DB: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)
Apr 4 10:38:52 Minin com.diymacserver.sqlgrey[357]: dbaccess: error: couldn't get now() from DB: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

Best regards,
Jan

Hi, I am considering setting up a server on a C2D Mac mini running SL as described on this site soon. Can anyone explain the pros and cons of compiling everything in 64 bits vs 32 bits, considering the kernel will be 32 bits? I am curious as to the impact on memory usage, disk usage, etc. My initial thoughts are that 32 bits will use less memory, processing, etc. I hope to use this mini as a desktop simultaneously as a server(is this a good idea?). Am I wrong?

Hi!

I'm about to start setting up a couple of Mac mini as internet servers (everything you describe here + Ruby on Rails + node.js).
I like your approach with compiling everything, but before I start I would like to know the pros and cons with MacPorts/Fink approach.

Next question is security and what is common the common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

Lastly how to compare to an Ubuntu server. (But I'm biased to use Mac Mini because of size and hw quality = uptime). If anyone can suggest a good reason to run Ubuntu, I consider to use it in a VMWare Fusion or similar.

Thanks for all suggestions! I hope to contribute with a few recipes when done with my servers.

Hi Richard,

My Mac Mini is older, but my copy of snow leopard has been burning a hole in my pocket for a while. I haven't upgraded to it, but I'm starting to think it's time.

Are there any special things I should know about upgrading to snow leopard and compiling 32 bit apps? Obviously, I'd want to back up the config files it changes (should've backed it up before now, really...).

Should I convert from courier to dovecot? I don't see instructions for doing so, but that could be a bad search on my part...

Richard, et al
I'm a newbie. I've never created a website but want to learn (and expect to use mysql/php). So, I purchased the new mac mini server. In your introduction, you mentioned that one wouldn't need to buy OS X Server. Does your installation instructions conflict with the Server Admin Tools under the OS? In other words, would your instructions for "installing-everything-on-snow-leopard" complement OS X Server or limit it's functionality in some way?
Thanks you, Adam

Does anyone have experience setting up a VPN via open source.

My production server just ate itself and I'm trying to figure out if there is a decent VPN solution for the server that I've been building from this site's instructions.

I'm looking into OpenVPN but it's only SSL. As far as I can tell L2TP over IPSec is not going to be possible but it's what I would prefer to use since it would work natively with my Mac laptops.

It looks like Tunnelblick might be an option on the client side but I'd have to configure OpenVPN for the server.

First of all congratulations for your initiative

Like you, I would install a basic mailserver OSX Snow without using OSX Server,
how to make a Automatic Mail redirection (Forward)
so I would not want to record my mails

if it is possible to do that ?
and before starting, what choice should he do Doveco or PostFix ?
something else ?

Thinks for help

Hi, oppologies if this is in the wrong section. Please let me know, and I will move it.

I have a very irritating problem.

I created my account username om my Mac ( OSX 10.6.2 ) long before I created my website. If we take it that my user account name happens to be 'myname' and my website happens to be http://www.myname.com. I hadn't noticed it was a problem until the other day. I changed the site base ref to work from http://myname.com away from http://www.myname.com

The problem is on my Mac, the address http://myname.com is referring to the local web server, ie pre installed Apache and library/webserver/documents not the actual web address. If Web server is switched off via the sharing control panels - the address returns a google not found page? which seems very odd. It will also do this from any user account - identical results, so I know the Mac has reserved the name in some way.

I dont want to rename my user account. I cant see my own website on my Mac which is very frustrating, as my website root is forcing all traffic to http://myname.com ( which is what I want of course ) and not http://www.myname.com. I have to use Parallels with a version of Windows to see the site properly.

Naturally I continue to search all the archives I can but to no avail - maybe Im looking in the wrong areas.

If anyone has any idea I'd be very grateful.

Not sure if you know... There's a opensource Coldfusion engine called Railo thats available. http://www.getrailo.org

For some reason I can compile and install it for the default apache installation but not the DIY method.

The way I compiles was.

$ cd /Applications/railo
$ ./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs --with-java-home=/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Home

$ make
$ sudo make install

This fails though and doesn't create /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_caucho.so or create the resin includes in the httpd.conf. It works if I compile to the default apache though.

Do you have any ideas why this isn't working?

For some time now I have been working on a solution to share contacts and calendar events between Macs, and others. I have come up with Address Book Server. This is not the same as the one included in Snow Leopard Server. Mine has been available for about 2 years now and supports 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6.

http://www.addressbookserver.com

This project is available as shareware at this point, but I am looking for other skilled people to get involved to expend the team and maybe move towards open sourcing the entire project. It seems to be that it could fit nicely into the diymacserver world.

I have a funny issue. I managed to install postfix, DSPAM, RoundCube. I can use my Mail.app on my MacBook to setup an IMAP mailbox and sync messages on my MacMiniServer. I can send messages using RoundCube but somehow I can not receive email messages coming from outside my network or other domains. I mean, if I send an email using RoundCube and email myemail@mydomain.net to myotheremail@mydomain.net, everything works perfectly.

But if I send an email from myworkemail@workdomain.com to myemail@mydomain.net... It doesn't work. The email never reaches my mydomain.net mailbox. I get:
The destination server for this recipient could not be found in the Domain Name System (DNS).

The email is correct, the DNS entries were not changed. What I did was only change the 192.168.1.x IP of the machine on the router. I used to run LinuxBox for my web/mail server on one IP, now it's a MacMini on another IP.
I googled and can't seem to get a right answer to this.
Any ideas, fellas?

Hey Richard, you ever think about adding a SVN tutorial to your site? I just recently enabled it on my Mac Mini and can't believe I ever lived without it. Works great to keep versions of my html/php documents while I create a site.

I also found a cool app that gives you web access to your repository at http://warehouseapp.com/ so I am able to maintain a GitHub.com like repository from my own server.

It's amazing how many things you can do with a Mac Mini.

dw on "Problems with updating CPAN / Perl (first step in Greylisting)"

Richard, compatriots,

Any clues on how to get this to work?

::

sudo perl -MCPAN -e 'install Bundle::CPAN'
Password:
Sorry, we have to rerun the configuration dialog for CPAN.pm due to
some missing parameters...

Normally CPAN.pm keeps config variables in memory and changes need to
be saved in a separate 'o conf commit' command to make them permanent
between sessions. If you set the 'auto_commit' option to true, changes
to a config variable are always automatically committed to disk.

<auto_commit>
Always commit changes to config variables to disk? [no]

A Build.PL is run by perl in a separate process. Likewise we run
'./Build' and './Build install' in separate processes. If you have any
parameters you want to pass to the calls, please specify them here.

Typical frequently used settings:

    --install_base /home/xxx             # different installation directory

<mbuildpl_arg>
Parameters for the 'perl Build.PL' command? []

Parameters for the './Build' command? Setting might be:

    --extra_linker_flags -L/usr/foo/lib  # non-standard library location

<mbuild_arg>
Your choice: []

Do you want to use a different command for './Build install'? Sudo
users will probably prefer:

    su root -c ./Build
or
sudo ./Build
or
/path1/to/sudo -u admin_account ./Build

<mbuild_install_build_command>
or some such. Your choice: [./Build]

Parameters for the './Build install' command? Typical frequently used
setting:

    --uninst 1 # uninstall conflicting files

<mbuild_install_arg>
Your choice: []

Please remember to call 'o conf commit' to make the config permanent!

Hi

I'm running a mac mini, which Richard kindly helped me get a mail server on. The only think other than that I run is a web forum for football supporters. I'm having real problems with the mysql/apache load.

Basically the server slows to a crawl on lunchtimes. I've got about 1.5k users, which can balloon up to 2.5k if something big hits the news. Average hits per day is somewhere between 50k and 90k (again if there's some big story).

Does anyone have any ideas? When I look at top I'm seeing MySQL sometimes at 150% plus of CPU processes, and the CPU itself maxed out between User and System with no idle. Also the average CPU load seems to be 2.5 plus. All these things aren't supposed to be I'm pretty sure, but I am unsure if it's a software issue or a hardware one. The forum software I run is phpbb3.

Any ideas?

At least one of the following features is sorely needed on home networks, without the need to run OSX server.
I suspect that all the machinery is in place on OSX client, just not in your face thru the GUI. Moreover, some of these solutions would be a good introduction for IT people to get their hands dirty before introducing OSX server at work.

True authentication at login using one of the OSX client machines to provide authentication services

Creating users with a remote home directory

True graphical login (NOT screen sharing) a la Xwindow on the machine that has your actual environment.

Other ways of exploiting the presence of Airport Express as a home server

It is just a pain having things duplicated (even synced using .mac) with user accounts (each of which can have a life of its own) on every single machine in the house. Besides, there is stuff (e.g., /Developer/, /Library/WebServer/ and other system configs) that lives outside user directories.

My question is: would you consider providing documentation on these issues on DIYMcSrvr?

Is there an easy way to check the active version of all the programs used in the Docs?
I know a couple:

MySQL:  /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql -V
Postfix:  sudo /usr/sbin/postfix –v
Apache:  /library/apache2/bin/apachectl -v
PHP:  /library/php5/bin/php -v

But how about:

OpenSSL
SASL
courier-authlib

Hello Richard

I've been reading your tutorial, and I'm planning on getting a mac mini in the near future to replace my current server (which is dying). I have a an IMAP server set up on it, and I my question is: How would I go about transferring all my email from my current server to the new server? (preferably through IMAP since I'm running something called SurgeMail on WinXP which doesn't seem very transfer-friendly by other means)

Also, I managed to set up my current server to download mail from my gmail account through POP3 on regular intervals. Would this be possible to achieve as well?

Thank you for (what looks like) a superb tutorial.

kind regards
Johan

I have found this web site to be so helpful, and I thank you, Richard, for running it. It has helped me more than once in targeting Mac server problems.

However, I've hit a wall and I can't seem to get around it. I don't expect the answer to be here, but I would love someone to point me to a solution.

Situation: We receive data from a variety of sources and generate results from that data. Depending on what was requested, any number of result files may be created. We need a way to send those files via a web form that is internal to our company.

Problem: I was using JUPload from http://www.jupload.biz as it would allow a user to easily pick multiple files via a nice java-based interface (having multiple single-file fields was too clunky), but I cannot get it to work anymore with the variety of web browsers (Safari, FF, IE). I have tried to contact the developers via their forums and emails but they have basically dropped off the face of the earth.

Request: Does anyone know of a nice tool that will easily allow multiple file selections for inclusion on a web page? I use Apache 2 and PHP5 installed via the instrux on this site.

I've scoured the net for other solutions with no luck. I'm hoping someone else has an idea. Thanks so much.
