I know it is possible, but I haven't tried it myself. You can compile the cpanel software on the mac. The difficulty lies in configuring Apache properly to be able to execute the commands with the correct privileges.

There are however alternatives that run on a Mac like: http://www.zpanelcp.com/

(for more alternatives look here: http://alternativeto.net/software/cpanel/?platform=mac)

Hello

I'm about to sell my Mac mini G4 (ie with the PowerPC processor) to friend. On that Mac mini, I have installed

PHP Version 5.4.0RC5-dev
MySQL 5.1.40
Apache 2.2.21

successfully, and many popular PHP apss run pefrectly on this machine.

But, the friend ahs asked if the cPanel can be installed and run on it.
Surely, there are many Web Management software like WebMin and other but he is accustomed to cPanel, and naturally asks for cPanel.

I've tried the "How to install cPanel/WHM on a fresh installation of Linux - WHM Setup Tutorials) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4Lqrbsptd4 but of course it asks for CentOS or similar Linux based OS.

I was wondering how possible it is to install cPanel on Mac, PowerPC or Intel?

Thanks!

Zelda, I once removed it because it was causing problems with getting it compiled and never found the need to re-include it.

Adding it is as simple as you indicate, change the without into with and keep your fingers crossed.

I used your great documentation to get a localhost server running on my iMac but i've run into a problem: i configured PHP pretty much the way you wrote in the documentation and recently noticed you had it compile without iconv and now i'm trying to use a piece of the Zend framework (Lucene search) that calls iconv functions and of course it fails with "Fatal error: Call to undefined function iconv()"

Was there a reason you compiled PHP without iconv: like it does not work on osx, or something else?

Any guidance on how to re-compile PHP with iconv: is it as simple as changing the line from without iconv to with iconv?

Thanks

Hi!

I'm considering to move from this nice DIY setup to Lion Server, just to ease the setup and maintenance.

The only thing I'm really concerned about is my mail server, and getting all my users mails over to Lion.
Do you know of any guide on how to do this?

Also, is there any particular functionality I will loose when migrating from DIY setup to Lion server (again, mail is my primarily concern)?

Thanks in advance!

Micheal, it looks like your mail is not fed into Dspam therefore no signature is added and all fails. I think you have to look into the connection between postfix and dspam there lies the error. It could be configuration or a permission problem.

Jan, when you upgrade most of the programs have been removed or replaced. What I've done after the upgrade to Lion is to recompile everything on the new platform with the new Xcode to reap all the benefits of the upgrade.

The mail stays in the same location so the upgrade won't remove or delete any of the existing stuff.

I've also relocated everything into /usr/local/ so that we don't get bothered anymore by security updates or upgrades.

I do have a server running set up according to the guidelines on this site.

Will my mail server continue to work after I upgrade to Lion, or will I have to reinstall reconfigure something, for this to work?

First of all, thanks for all the guides... My server works just fine ;) Only one thing i was missing, it is installing mod_svn for apache.. Here is my contribution how to build mod_svn.

1. Get SVN sources. The version shipped with Snow Leopard is 1.6.15
2. Compile it. I do all in 64 bits.

CFLAGS="-g -arch x86_64" CXXFLAGS="-arch x86_64" LDFLAGS="" \
   ./configure --prefix=/usr/local \
    --mandir=/usr/local/share/man --with-ssl \
    --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs --with-zlib="/usr" \
    --enable-swig-bindings=no --without-berkeley-db \
    --with-apr=/usr/local/apache2 \
    --with-apr-util=/usr/local/apache2

    make
    sudo make install

    The configuration for apache is straight forward and described on tigris site.

There it is defined which SASL or other authentication is used at the moment. Unfortunately I don't have a server license otherwise I would have a look at it myself. If you want I can have a look at it, please mail me at info @ this domain.

I guess I just really don't have any expertise on what all goes into generating these make statements. I'm looking at:

http://www.postfix.org/SASL_README.html

where it discusses PAM (which it says uses saslauthd) to try to understand more, but I'm still a little lost.

- How can I tell for sure whether PAM is indeed what's being used for MOSXS?
- If it is, then what should I add to the make statement? Something referencing saslauthd?
- I've been Googling a lot, but it sure seems difficult to find out the specifics of Postfix on MOSXS. I find it difficult to believe that hardly anybody has tried upgrading the MOSXS-included Postfix...where should I look?

Sorry that I'm rather clueless when it comes to compiling, and thus far rely on what you and others specify in tutorials, hints, etc. Thanks again for your reply!

Fred, sorry for the later then planned reply (had a few days off!) but the problem is that the server version uses a completely different authentication method then I do in my setup. I think it uses the PAM method. I have no experience with that or how compiling will affect the setup.

You could have a look at the method macports uses for compiling postfix: https://trac.macports.org/browser/trunk/dports/mail/postfix/Portfile

Hi Richard (& others)--

I know this is outside the normal realm and scope of this site, but I'm not sure where else to turn. I'd like to upgrade Postfix on a PPC Mac OS X Server 10.5 and a Mac Pro MOSXS 10.6. They come w/ v2.4.3 and v2.5.5, respectively, and I need at least v2.6 to implement the tcp_windowsize parameter in the hopes of getting around a sending problem w/ larger messages.

Currently, I'm tackling the G4 Leopard Server first, since it is a backup and fouling it up isn't the end of the world. I can get Postfix 2.8.2 to compile and run, and even receive mail, but I must be messing up something with my make statement, as I am unable to use SASL authentication for sending (and I could before). The log shows:

May  5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: connect from unknown[192.168.1.101]
May 5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: warning: SASL authentication failure: Password verification failed
May 5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: warning: unknown[192.168.1.101]: SASL PLAIN authentication failed: authentication failure
May  5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: lost connection after AUTH from unknown[192.168.1.101]
May  5 20:10:01 G4-Server postfix/smtpd[28752]: disconnect from unknown[192.168.1.101]

I've tried to use a portion of the make statement from the directions here, w/ some tweaking from the docs at postfix.org. Since this is a MOSXS, I have not configured MySQL, so I've left that part out. Here is what I entered last:

sudo make -f Makefile.init makefiles CCARGS="-DUSE_TLS -DUSE_SASL_AUTH -DUSE_CYRUS_SASL -I/usr/include/sasl \
" AUXLIBS="-lssl -lcrypto -L/usr/local/lib -lsasl2"

Any thoughts or insights into why this error might be occurring? I've been unable to find any links to instructions or tips for upgrading the MOSXS installation of Postfix.

Thanks,
Fred

No, Skip-networking is not enabled.
On the other hand, neither is "port", could that be a problem? I guess not, at least not related to this...

Hi Richard, thanks for your responses, your help is highly appreciated!

I'm running an DIY server, the only thing that is not according to your guides, is the MySQL, which I downloaded and installed of the MySQL website back in October, just before I found your excellent website.
The version is Server version: 5.1.51 MySQL Community Server
the my.cfn is located in /private/etc/my.cnf and the content is:

[client]
socket = /var/mysql/mysql.sock

[mysqld]
socket = /var/mysql/mysql.sock

And if I understand you correct, this is the setting that SQLGrey should pick up, just as the rest of the components does correctly. Right?
If I'm to change the connection setting, where should I do that? In my amateur eyes, this all seems just about right... Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

After some googling I found that Perl uses the MYSQL config file to determine the connection or socket settings in the config file.

Otherwise we need to change the code to make a database connection look like:
DBI->connect("DBI:mysql:host=localhost:mysql_socket=/tmp/mysql.sock;database=business"...

Hi!

I have a problem that has been keeping me puzzled since I installed my OSX "Server" in October:

When I restart my server, postfix cannot connect to Dovecot. This it turns out, is related to that postgrey cannot ponnect to the database.
For some reason, sqlgrey is trying to connect to the socket (I assume) /tmp/mysql.sock!

The workaround for this is simple, just create a link from the socket file /private/var/mysql/mysql.sock to /tmp/mysql.sock using:
"ln /private/var/mysql/mysql.sock /tmp/mysql.sock".
The disadvantage of this, is that /tmp is emptied on every restart of the server, so I have to manually run this command after each restart.

But WHY is this happening? Looking in my sqlgrey.conf, I have the following connection settings:
db_type = mysql
db_name = sqlgrey
# Note: the following are not used with SQLite
db_host = localhost
db_port = default

Which is the same as any other component that uses MySQL on the system, and all other works fine!
I have tried to change the location of the mysql.sock file, but that basically causes all other components to fail :-(

Is there a hidden setting in perl (which sqlgrey is built upon), which points to an alternative mysql location?

Alternatively how can I prevent OSX from deleting the /tmp/mysql.sock link on shutdown?

What I see in my system.log file is this:
Apr 4 10:38:52 Minin com.diymacserver.sqlgrey[357]: dbaccess: can't connect to DB: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)
Apr 4 10:38:52 Minin com.diymacserver.sqlgrey[357]: dbaccess: error: couldn't get now() from DB: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

Best regards,
Jan

Hi Rob,

This is a known problem and if you look at the blog and look at the articles that talk about the security updates you see that this sometimes happens and how to fix it.
